In most cases, WordPress automatically handles redirection and you do not have to worry about anything. What you just have to do is go to Settings> Permalinks and select the permalink structure that you want to keep. I always recommend to using /% postname%/ permalink structure. Once you change permalinks, open any of your old permalink and check that it is redirecting you to your corresponding new permalink, If yes, congratulations, you do not need to do anything now, if not, keep reading ahead.

Many times the old permalinks seem to show 404 error, in such cases, you have to check your .htaccess file. You have to change the permission of your .htaccess file to 777 and then repeat the process described above. By doing so, your problem should be resolved. You can see the example below.
